When you start a new acne treatment, should your acne get worse before it gets better?

Question by Miranda so Masochistic: When you start a new acne treatment, should your acne get worse before it gets better?
OK so I just started using this new acne medicine last night. It’s not proactive but it’s just like it. I’ve read that your acne will get worse before it gets better. Is this true? And if so, why? Is it because it brings the bacteria to the surface?
Oh, and if it does get worse before it gets better, should I pop the pimples or should I let the medicine do it’s trick?
